Athletic Performance Fitness Program
What is Athletic Performance?
Our Athletic Performance Program is a personalized plan to guide high school, college and recreational athletes from poor to peak performance with our physical therapists. This encompasses a wide range of factors which include strength, speed, agility, endurance, coordination, movement, balance, and flexibility. Achieving optimal athletic performance often requires a combination of physical training, mental focus, skill development, and proper nutrition and recovery strategies. Our physical therapists work with athletes at different levels to maximize their potential through an individually developed plan.
Athletic performance often suffers in athletes with pain, injury and illness. Our sports physical therapists are skilled when working with the complex, painful or injured athletes back to performing their sport 100% on the athletic field, gym or race. Our physical therapists focus on physical skills and mental attributes to improve sports performance, injury rehabilitation and prevention, and support overall long term athletic development.
Athletic Performance by our Physical Therapists vs Traditional Personal Training or Physical Therapy
Traditionally physical therapy protocols for athletes are a cookbook and not personalized. These protocols are often followed by large physical therapy centers and hospitals because they are concerned with productivity standards that schedule 3-4 patients at a time with each rehab provider. Often therapy aides and techs are used to keep the athlete moving through a protocol because there is simply not enough time for a skilled therapist to intervene. Hands-on stretching is most likely not part of the athlete’s protocol. Finally, insurance guidelines will limit an athletes return to sport potential by concluding care because the injured body region is now within normal limits in strength and range of motion. In our experience, this does not prepare the athlete to return to sport 100% in peak performance and minimize reinjury.
Personal training may be a good alternative once traditional physical therapy is concluded due to insurance limitations. However, a certified personal trainer will not have the skilled experience or education required to fully guide a complex, injured or painful athlete back to 100% sport ready condition and peak performance.

Medical Fitness Program
Medical Fitness Program:
Our physical therapists specialize in creating personalized, safe and beneficial wellness and fitness programs for those that are in chronic pain, have had one or multiple injuries, or a life altering event (heart attack or stroke). We work with clients that have never exercised before or are not comfortable using a busy gym. Whatever your fitness goal is, we will partner with you to create a program to help you work towards being successful at reaching that goal. We will provide our medical fitness services in the comfort and convenience of your own home, building gym, hotel or office.
How Medical Fitness Training Works:
1. Functional Movement (Screen, Test, Assessment)- Prior to starting your wellness training program with us, our physical therapist will discuss with you your medical and injury history. We want to understand where you have been and what you have been through in order to help you exercise in a safe manner moving forward toward your goals. Your functional assessment will consist of you performing movements that are common in daily life such as: squatting, lunging, balancing on one foot, reaching overhead and behind your back. Your physical therapist will be looking at the quality of your movements and difficulties performing these movements. Your functional assessment score will help your physical therapist plan a safe and beneficial exercise program for you. This information will allow us to record baseline measurements, track your progress and look at how much improvement you have made along the way toward reaching your goals.
2. Stretch and Flexibility (Screen, Test, Assessment)-
How do we know what exercise program to prescribe and what weight is too much or too little for you? Great question! Your physical therapist will perform simple stretch testing for your arms, legs and core region followed by flexibility testing for your arms, legs and trunk. This information will allow us to record baseline measurements, track your progress and look at how much improvement you have made along the way to reaching your goals.
3. Cardiovascular (Screen, Test, Assessment)-
To assess the health of your heart and lungs, your physical therapist can perform a cardiovascular assessment for you. This will consist of measuring your heart rate, blood pressure and respiratory rate at rest. Your physical therapist may perform tests such as the YMCA Step Test or 1 Mile Treadmill Walk Test which can rank your cardiovascular fitness versus those of the same gender and age group. This information will allow us to record baseline measurements, track your progress and look at how much improvement you have made along the way to reaching your goals.
4. Body Mass Index (BMI) (Screen, Test, Assessment)-
How do we know if our weight is just right or too heavy? One method is to perform a Body Mass Index (BMI) assessment which consists of using your scale to weigh you, then compare that weight with your gender and height. The BMI chart can tell us if you are just right, obese or morbidly obese. We are not here to judge! And if weight loss is important to you, we are happy to help you towards your goal. This information will allow us to record baseline measurements, track your progress and look at how much improvement you have made along the way to reaching your goals.
5. The Plan
Now that your physical therapist has learned about your medical and injury history, discussed your goals and completed a fitness (Screen, Test, Assessment), a personalized comprehensive medical fitness and wellness plan will be created for you. We will discuss frequency and duration of your program. We believe in developing this plan together to ensure that you have a fun, safe and beneficial experience with us.
Your program may consist of:
-Exercise
Our physical therapists will teach you how to conveniently use items around the home to exercise in a fun, creative way. Should your building have a gym, we will teach you how to select the most appropriate equipment for the greatest benefit. It is important to find the right starting point for you to make sure we are productive while avoiding being overly sore or tired.
-Hands on stretching
As physical therapists, we are trained in safe and beneficial methods to stretch or massage body regions that are sore and stiff. We can provide this service to compliment your exercise program.
-Nutrition Recommendations
Do you have questions about why fruits and nuts are more helpful to keep your energy up than coffee or sugary sweets? Do you have questions about why you simply “hit the wall” while training for your half marathon? Do you want recommendations how to improve weight loss or strength gain with better nutrition? Your physical therapist is educated to answer your questions. In full disclosure, we are not representing ourselves to be certified nutritionists or licensed dieticians, therefore, we are happy to refer you to one of these trusted professionals should your questions be out of the scope of our physical therapist’s training.
Medical Fitness vs Traditional Fitness Program
The goal of our medical fitness program is to improve overall health and quality of life, manage chronic conditions, prevent injuries, and support clients in achieving their fitness goals in a safe and sustainable manner. Whether someone is recovering from surgery, managing a chronic illness, or simply looking to improve their fitness level, a medical fitness program provides the expertise and support needed to optimize health outcomes and promote long-term success.
Personal training may be a good alternative for a fitness program, however, a certified personal trainer will not have the skilled experience or education required to safely plan and guide a fitness program for a complex, injured or medically fragile client.
Could Medical Fitness Benefit You?
Our physical therapists provide solutions to a diverse range of individuals with different medical conditions, fitness levels and goals. Here are some examples of clients who may benefit from a medical fitness program:
- Post Surgery Patients
- Seniors
- Pre and Post Natal women
- Athletes with specialized needs
- Chronic Disease Management
