Recovery Physical Therapy, New York City, NY
I’m a licensed physical therapist trained in movement disorders and skilled in techniques that improve soft tissue health, increase flexibility, promote a greater range of motion and reduce pain. As a specialist in musculoskeletal function, I treat impairments and disability caused from injury or illness in what I refer to as a process of “recovery physical therapy”. In most cases the goal in recovery physical therapy is to return to return you to your level of function prior to the illness or injury, as quickly and safely as possible.
Initially I essentially perform an evaluation to determine limitations and why the pain or dysfunction is occurring. I can correct the dysfunction, educate you about the dysfunction, and provide you with the knowledge to keep yourself healthy, decreasing the possibility of continued need for therapy or other medical services.
Recovery physical therapy can address many different issues including sprains/strains, back and neck pain, shoulder instability, ankle pain and instability, foot pain, sports injuries, work injuries, dizziness, pre- and post-surgical rehabilitation, incontinence, pre- and post-pregnancy pain, arthritis, osteoporosis and weight bearing restrictions. This is not an all-inclusive list, as recovery physical therapy has multiple aspects to help an individual to regain their function.
In general physical therapy is often considered a last ditch effort before surgery but in actuality early physical therapy treatment can decrease not only the individual’s pain but the overall cost of health care you may encounter, such as decreased testing, decreased medication prescription and decreased return physician appointments.
If you have recently experienced an injury or undergone surgery, your doctor may have recommended that you use a recovery physical therapy program to aid in your return to full health. If you have never used this type of medical service in the past, this may have seemed like strange advice. After all, recovery physical therapy exercises involve movement and activity at a time when you may feel like you should be resting and taking it easy. However, recovery physical therapy offers a number of worthwhile benefits for patients.
Recovery Physical Therapy Aids the Return to Full Health
While you may be tempted to rest your body after a difficult change like an injury or a surgery, participating in recovery physical therapy program can actually help you recover faster. Because your muscles may have stiffened or fallen out of use during your treatment, your recuperation may be hampered by the weakened state of your body. By using recovery physical therapy you can progressively increase your strength, improve your mobility, and return to a healthy state.
Recovery Physical Therapy Reduces the Risk of Further Injury
Activity is a great way to help your body heal. However, recovery physical therapy programs use special equipment and exercises which are carefully designed to put limited stress on your body. This reduces the risk of further injury while teaching you how to improve your condition. Moreover, if you are recovering from a stroke, amputation, or other change that has resulted in a drastic change to your day to day life, recovery physical therapy can help you acclimate and avoid further injuries that might be caused by unfamiliarity.
Recovery Physical Therapy Helps You Regain Your Original Capabilities
Whether you’re simply feeling weak after your ailment, need to recover, or must adjust to a change in your body’s performance, programs centered on recovery physical therapy can help you regain your original capabilities. This can involve anything from relearning how to pick up an object to building muscle around a knee replacement, or even increasing your overall mobility. Whatever your goal is, recovery physical therapy can help you return to your normal life and activities.
